March 6th “The Utah Lake Authority”“Francesca Clapcich” We are honored and excited to have:

Professional athlete Francesca Clapcich is one of the world’s most versatile sailors. She has twice represented Italy at both the London (finishing 19th) and Rio (finishing 5th) Olympic Games in the Laser and 49erFX classes respectively; was the first Italian woman to compete in the Solitaire du Figaro; and has raced around the world twice in The Ocean Race, becoming the first Italian to win the notoriously challenging race in the 2022-23 edition. She is the very first female skipper to compete in the Ocean Fifty Series, leading the all-female team UpWind by MerConcept, and she will compete in the Puig Women’s America’s Cup for American Magic in October 2024. Her next big goal is to compete in the 2028 Vendée Globe, sailing solo and non-stop around the planet.

What's in a Name?

Boat names are interesting. They are regal. They are thought provoking. They are humorous. They are intimidating. They are curious. They tell a story, They are redundant, They are personal.

Actually, this 1902, 52' Fife Bermudan Cutter caugt my eye, just because of it's beautiful sheer and it's regal sweep out of the water. It's obvious craftsmanship in the build and impecable deck layout.

But what's with that name?

Sibyl of Cumae

Well, I guessed Sibyl to be a feminine name. Lots of boats are named after the fairer gender. But what's with Cumae? When in doubt...where do I turn for answers but Wikipedia. Very interesting.

I figure if Walter Mitty can do it, so can I.

So I'm going to (in my dreams), arrange for a sea trial on Sybil, bum a helicopter ride to Plymouth, England, take her out for a sea trial around Eddystone Light, have my professional surveyor sign off on the boat, make an offer and transfer the funds to the Royal Bank of Scotland. And I'm keeping the name. Next I'm going to provision the boat (with plenty oh Haggis), get out my charts and begin my odyssey to Cumae, across the channel, along the French coast, then Spain and Portugal, rounding Gibralter into the Med, along the French Riviera, and finally, after 2,900 nautical miles, drop anchor in Porto de Pozzuoli, Italy. No time to waste in getting to the caves of Cumae. Grabbing my  long board, I hit the road.

Speaking of names... if you can remember the names, rattled off after each NPR segment of the "Tappet Brothers" you may have picked out a favorite from their long list of zainy names.
