Who does Utah Lake belong to? Spring has sprung!

Who does Utah Lake belong to?

Utah Lake belongs to so many.
And shall be held in trust for the people.

When is the last time you've inspected your trailer bearings?

A few thoughts when using the mast crane.

Obviously the mast is vertical here, but the visual is so much easier to understand as to were the lifting bail (yellow strap) should be placed around your lower standing rigging, before you begin the stepping/dropping process. Note: Do not include forestay and backstay, or upper standing rigging in this bail "package".
Bail needs to (eventually) rest underneath spreader bars when raising/lowering mast.
"Mouse" a piece of wire or use black tape to close hook opening, for safety/security when lifting.

When stepping the mast, I like to keep the backstay attached. This insures the mast will not fall forward as the mast begins to center vertically.

Raising and lowering the mast with the aid of a cordless drill is a piece of cake.
I understand folks that think this worm winch is slow when cranking by hand,
but figuring in the lack of safety of a 1:1 trailer winch,...safer seemed better.
Please start out as slow so you can gradually build up speed. These new drills have so much torque, they will actually back the self locking nut right off if you're not careful.

Note the soft wrap (beach towel) on the furling drum. You won't scratch your deck, and you won't break your drum housing with this protection. Make sure all standing rigging is not binding or twisted at the chain plates as you bring the mast to vertical. Have all electrical connections ready to connect at this point.

The mast has been brought to the vertical position by using the jib halyard (which may require a messenger line attached) which is secured to the bow pulpit (out of the way of the forestay stem fitting).

Using the Provo Marina mast crane is a safe way to step your mast. Notice the roller furling assembly is ready to connect as the jib halyard holds the mast forward. Once the roller furling assembly is attached, the jib halyard can be removed and the process of "tuning" your rig begins. Secure your rigging tune with stop nuts above and below turnbuckles. Using cotter keys to secure turnbuckles may result in sharp end protrusions, unless you wrap each turnbuckle in riggers tape..

Get all your tools ready to go:
Power drill with 2, fully charged batteries, 10" extension, 17mm socket, a 3/8" square driver (from drill chuck to extension), a "bale" that will wrap around your standing rigging and mast (your mast is not that heavy, 70-150 lbs.), a large soft towel to wrap your roller furling drum (if you have one), T-head clevis bolts (should already have these if you saved them from mast takedown) to attach standing rigging to chain plates, split rings, cotter keys and/or safety nuts (right hand and left hand threads), wheel chocks, ladder, tie down straps or extra line (rope), bottled water.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. You will develop your own technique. Just try to think through the steps and the results of what you are doing.

Summer Sailstice coming June 23, 2023

On our trip to the Canadian Gulf Islands, 2019, we (I) discovered Patrick McManus, while at anchor in Tod Inlet, Buchart Gardens , B.C. Canada.

After dinner, our crew gathered around the saloon table of our gorgeous 50' Bavaria sloop,
and had one of the best, most fun, memorable story swapping sessions
that is legal in all 3 Canadian territories.

This is a sample of those good times.

Top it all off with hard to find Nanaimo Bars,
and you've finally found bliss.
