Sail to Santa Catalina Island

November 3 - 6
A great way to get some blue water experience in a larger boat,
before heading out to the Caribbean.
Learn how to pick up a mooring ball, use a chart plotter, hail Harbor Patrol on VHF,
plot a course on paper charts, familiarization with AIS and collision avoidance
with big freighters, navigating with phone apps, & big boat sail trim.
Sample the great restaurants in Avalon and more.
Registration deadline Friday, October 21.
Reserve your spot now.

 Spacious 46' Beneteau saloon area.

Not ready to let go of those nice warm days yet?
Forecasters are saying 77 degrees in Long Beach, Avalon, 60's - 70's.

Always great steaks at Steve's Steak House, Avalon.

Magnetic North on the move.
(Yellow push pins locate MN in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2016).
This is why we buy new charts each year. Santa Claus just keeps moving further north.
In fact, since 2001, Rudolph has dragged that sled just over 1/2 thousand miles
closer towards True North.

If that interests you, how about "pole reversals"?

Before you go in the water...know your neighbors.

Giant Oar Fish on the beach, Catalina Island.

A new Boat Building Class has just begun at Glendale Middle School,
where two new Bella !0 boats will be built by the students.

Borders of Oceans
When do you you know when you've sailed into a different ocean?

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the five major oceans. Fridtjof Nansen was the first to make a nautical crossing of the Arctic Ocean, in 1896. It is generally taken to include Baffin Bay, Barents Sea, Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, East Siberian Sea, Greenland Sea, Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea and other tributary bodies of water. It is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Bering Strait and the Atlantic through the Greenland Sea and Labrador Sea.
