My Grandparents lived on White Bear Lake, Minnesota, back in the 50's. I would go down to the docks with Gramps' bamboo fishing pole and bring back a mess of little Sunfish for Gramdma to fry up. Sometimes I would go out on the lake on an improvissed inner tube raft and just paddle around.
Little did I know at the time that White Bear Lake would be the beginings of some of todays major players in the sailing industry. Buddy Melges bought out Johnson Marine, (a long time innovative boat building business), right there on the shores of White Bear Lake. Johnson Marine was involved in designing and producing hundreds of Scow class boats, regularly seen racing on White Bear Lake. No doubt, Buddy Melges had also incubated ideas for his racing designs right here in sleeply White Bear Lake. Who knew?
