Myth Busters, Sailing to the BVI's

WINTER SAILING SEMINAR
SAILING DISTANT OCEANS
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Josh and Jackie went through Bonneville's "Learn to Sail" program last year and decided to take their new found skills down to the BVI's for the sailing adventure we've all dreamed of. When we talk to people about their sailing dreams, chartering in the Carrebean is always at the top of the list, but they often lament that they are not ASA or US Sailing certified. After hearing this time after time, we did the research and came up with some real myth busting facts from the charter companies themselves. Moorings only requires a sailing resume and good sailing skills.
Sunsail offers an on-line sailing resume form, and after plugging in Bonneville's certificate requirements from our "Learn to Sail" program, our graduates are evaluated as "advanced monohull sailors". You DO NOT NEED AN ASA or US SAILING CERTIFICATE to charter from Abacos to Dubrovnik, Belieze to Phuket. Just good solid basic sailing experience, gained right here on Utah Lake. Who knew! Come and listen to two remarkable sailors with a remarkable story to tell. Hopefully, they will motivate us all to live the dream.

Our next seminar, Thursday, March 1, 7-8:30 PM, will be on  "First Aid For Sailors", presented by Dave Isom a certified veteran Red Cross First Responder/CPR instructor; and sharing the seminar we will also present Bonneville's new "Racing Program". Steve Monson, program director, will discuss the fun, benefits, and skills that a racing program can offer. Here's a great video to vicariously experience an ocean racing event aboard RORC racing boats.

Last week we enjoyed hearing from Clay and Kim Chivers who shared their photos and videos from their trip to Catalina Island. They witnessed an extremely rare "Dolphin Stampede". I've never seen anything like it.

Olympic Breaking News!

Thumbs up on Stars returning to the 2016 Olympics
as published by Sailing Anarchy

"We’ve heard the rumors for a long time now, but today we confirmed that the ink is dry on an agreement to bring the Star back to the Olympics for the 2016 games.  No other class will be displaced; it’s all thanks to a strange IOC quirk that allows the host country to add an event of their choosing to the games.  We’re told that Rio will need to pay for the costs of running the Star racing; a small price to pay for a very likely Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada medal"

Before you float your boat...

This is cheap insurance, considering the outcome of failure of any of these vital parts. You may remenber "Recovery Room" (Catalina 25 swing keel) sank in her slip a few years ago.  Check your keel cable (if you have one), turning ball, keel eyebolt assembly, as well as all thru-hulls, attaching hoses (all should be double clamped), and clamp condition. Who wants to worry if these things are good to go. Especially if you have purchased a "new to you" boat. You really have no idea what the history is on these items. Catalina Direct has exceptional customer service and these parts arrived two days after ordering.
